Code 4 ?

So I went to Office Max Hobby Lobby today. I am looking for a cheap way to bind PDF’s that I print out. I don’t do it often and I don’t really like binder notebooks where I have to insert the pages into plastic sheets and such. They have binding machines available on Amazon for under $50, but I wanted to see if there was something available locally. I was surprised that I did not find what I was looking for at Office Max, I assumed this was the sort of thing they would have on hand, but I was wrong.

I did not expect to find a binding machine at Hobby Lobby, but I figured they might have a clever alternative for me. So I walked in and went over to the scrap booking section. After looking around for a bit, I hear a calm voice over the intercom, “Code four in Isle 12”. I thought nothing of it, I figured it was a feisty child making a mess. Within a minute or so I had 4 employees surrounding me asking me if there was anything They could help me find. They started asking me questions about the project I was working on and what types of material and tools I was using. I thought this was very odd, normally in stores like this you have to chase employees down and handcuff them to the shelving to get any help. After explaining what I was doing, there seemed to be an air of relief and most everyone wandered away. Curious, I found one of those employees and asked I was the “Code 4”, and she said yes I was. Confused, I asked what a “Code 4” is, and she sheepishly told me it was an unattended male in the store. Apparently scrap booking with power tools is both a thing and is frowned upon by the scrap booking community.

Edit: This was written purely as a joke, Hobby Lobby in no way mistreated me at anytime.

Summer is over

Once again summers end has come and once again I feel as though I should have went somewhere and done something, but I didn’t. While here in Texas the it will be hot for several weeks yet, the really hot sultry days are now behind us. As the cooler air from up north starts making its way down, we will get warm breezy days and chilly nights. As a kid I loved the dog days of summer because we were out of school and were free to roam unshackled and unsupervised. Like it or not, those were the best days of our lives, we will never have that kind of free time again until we are too old to enjoy it.

I feel old

When I was in my 20’s, I never felt old, when I was in my 30’s I occasionally felt old, when I was in my 40’s I felt old about half the time, now that I am in my 50’s, I feel old most of the time, I am not looking forward to my 60’s.

On this day in history

On July 20th 1969 Neil Armstrong became the first man to step foot on the moon. I am old enough that I sort of remember the hype around this, just like I sort of remember the events surrounding Watergate. This is one of those things I wish I had a clearer memory of, because it was important. This was one of those events in human history that shows what we can do when we put our minds to it. Neil Armstrong’s walk on the moon proved we could do anything. One of my greatest fears is looking back at this and finally realizing it was that moment where we reached our zenith and we will never be that great again.

Cutting the cable

I canceled my cable TV service today, I also killed the service to my two TiVo’s. This really started last fall when I realized I was forcing myself to watch TV shows I was really not enjoying all that much. Over the last 6 months, the wife has been more and more watching Korean dramas via streaming services like Drama Fever. Neither of us has watched much real network TV in months. A couple of weeks ago I called my provider and reduced my service down, I figured $40 a month is fine and I might come across something I like. A couple of weeks later, I am thinking about it and really, I am still not watching TV, virtually every show I have seen has been on NetFlix, Amazon or Hulu.

So yesterday I went out and bought a set of old fashioned rabbit ears and surprise, I get 6 channels, pretty clear. Most of the channels are PBS stations, but I also get an ABC affiliate as well. I also bought a cheap DVR on Amazon to record the odd show, like Masterpiece Theater. I got one for $30, all I need to add is a USB storage device, I have like 6 laying around here of various sizes.

Today, I drove to the cable company and did the deed, I decided to in instead of calling for two reasons, first I had to turn in the M-Cards anyway and second I figured if I called, they would try to talk me out of it, if I go in, there would be 10 people behind me waiting and the person waiting on me would have no interest in delaying the line. I was basically right, I was out in less than 10 minutes.

Once that was done, I called TiVo and told them I no longer had cable and they obliged me very quickly by cancelling my service and not asking any questions. The TiVo service was costing me $40 a month, $20 for each box. The cable prior to my downgrading it was costing me $180 a month, including internet. My bill should now be around $65 for just the internet. That is a nice savings of $155 per month. I don’t think I am going to miss it much.

Happy 4/20

To all my Day Dream Believer friends, this is your day, Have Fun!

2016: Well that kinda sucked

Well what can I say 2016 was a pretty fucked up year. While my personal life had a couple of bumps in the road, it was really nothing any adult middle aged person can’t handle without too much in the way of problems. The rest of the world on the other hand seemed to be bent on starting dumpster fires everywhere.

For my own personal bumps, my mother had a stroke forcing me to return to Montana for a few days. My mother is doing better, but PezWitch had to stay in Montana for 5 weeks to help out my family while she recovered. This made for a rather stressful summer and I was a bit lonely while she was gone.

Every year brings the deaths of prominent and beloved people, this year was especially bad with Prince, David Bowie and Carrie Fisher passing on. All of these people impacted my life in one way or another and to varying degrees. Carrie Fisher was especially saddening, while her career basically peaked at the age of 21, many of her problems were brought on by mental illness and drug addiction. I can only imagine what she would have accomplished if someone had stepped in when she was 25 rather than 45.

All in all it has been a rough year, but as always, I am optimistic for the the new one.

Stoddard Family Siblings

The old picture was taken in the late 60’s, I am thinking 68 or 69 because I cannot be more than 6 in that picture. The newer picture was taken this last Thanksgiving. I am posting this here for posterity sake.

Sigh!

At this moment in time, I really fucking hate my life.

Call from my future self

I got a call yesterday, the caller ID said it was from me. I assume this is me from the future trying to contact me in the present and provide me with some important bit of information like some lottery numbers, a hot stock tip or when the zombie apocalypse will start. I happened to be in a meeting and could not answer it. I figured future me would leave voice mail, what I found out is future me is as much of an asshole as I am, he didn’t leave a message.

Things my Grand Niece Learned Last Week

My Niece brought out an ice cream sandwich and told me it would cost me $5, I offered her $1, I was perfectly willing to go to $3, she held fast at $5, I went and got my own ice cream sandwich, I then offered her 50 cents for the  ice cream sandwich she had.

The lesson learned; “Never refuse to negotiate with an Italian.”

Happy Anniversary

Today is our 31st wedding anniversary. To date I still have not figured out why PezWitch stays with me considering all the stupid shit I have pulled over the years. Regardless, I am glad she did.

On the day of my 52nd year……

Thanksgiving is a couple of days behind, Black Friday was ignored and today is my Birthday. I sat down three times to write this blog post and other than the title, I really do no have much to say. Maybe I will try again this afternoon.

This made me laugh

Normally I am not disposed to posting cat pictures, but this made me laugh.

The Hand of Vecna has been found

The doom of the world is at hand. The Hand of Vecna has been found along with a treasure map and some old coins.

When I get home I am packing up my battle axe and crossbow, gathering a group of intrepid adventurers and heading out. Who is in?

RIP Leonard Nimoy

Today Leonard Nimoy died. This has had a more profound affect on me than the death of my father. Mr. Spock has always been my favorite fictional character. To a skinny little nerd boy, a hyper-intelligent character for whom violence was always a last resort, was an breath of fresh air in a world dominated by two dimensional cowboy characters. My earliest memories are of watching Star Trek on a small black and white TV. Leonard Nimoy provided me with the best role model possible and gave me a lifetime of entertainment and happiness. For this I am thankful.

Now, I am off to Florida to steal the Space Shuttle Enterprise and head the Genesis planet.

The End is Near

It is New Years and I have somewhat mixed feelings about 2014. On the one hand I got the opportunity to stand up a completely new team at work, which was challenging and fun. On the other hand I was robbed and PezWitch never quite recovered from the experience emotionally. So I suppose 2014 is what it is and its time to put it behind me and move on.

Happy New Year everyone.

My life miscellaneous

I seem to be going through one of “THOSE” periods in my life. I seem to have lost interest in TV. Up until a few weeks ago I watched several shows, The Mentalist, Person of Interest, Blacklist and quite a few others. For whatever reason, I found I was forcing myself to watch these shows, that they really provided me with very little entertainment. So I did a test, I removed all the shows I generally watched without PezWitch from all our DVR’s. I figured after a couple of missed episodes, I would go back to check on them and see what was happening. More surprising was what actually happened, it was weeks before I even thought about any of those shows again. The only reason it came to the foreground was I happened to catch an episode of the Mentalist and decided to watch it, I fell asleep less than 10 minutes in. This begs the question for me, how much TV are we watching simply because we are in the habit of doing so?

I’m Back!

It is one year to the day since I stopped blogging and moved my wondrous insight to Facebook and I am seriously considering coming back.

So long and thanks for all the fish – Part 2

This is officially my last post here. I may start blogging again in the future, if I do, I will probably start over from scratch. I plan to leave this blog intact for the time being, but I will likely take it down at some point. I have no plans to give up this site, if for no other reason than to continue the Companions of Xarth wiki and maintain my current email address. I visited my Facebook account for the first time in weeks and I shaved my friends list down to 30, I may even go tighter than that. However, if you are family or made some reasonable effort to stay in contact with me, I will not unfriend you. I will start posting my random meanderings there. So there you have it, after 28 months, thanks for reading, it was fun.

So long and thanks for all the fish – Part 1

Okay, I am going to admit defeat here. I simply do not have the bandwidth anymore to post here on anything remotely resembling regularity. In the next day or two I am going to decide if I just want t take a break for the summer or if I need to just shut it down and shift what little blogging I do back to Facebook. Right now, I am leaning towards the latter rather than the former.

Interesting moments in life

The girl behind the counter at Chick-fil-A gave me the senior discount. A couple of years ago this might have annoyed me, today, my only thought was Woo-Hoo 10% discount, life is good.

Happy Pi Day

Happy February 29th

It is leap year and today is the bonus day we get once every four years. You’d think they would make this an automatic day off for everyone, but no, our corporate overlords can’t allow us to have too much fun. Sigh!
